In Real Life "IRL" Guest Suite by Joy Street Design

Inspiration & Theme
The guest suite is a respite from everyday life and envelopes its inhabitants in warm duo-chromatic colors, cozy fabrics, and modern features. This room also seeks to bring relevant elements of the metaverse (digital art, NFTs, etc.) into the real world and bridge the gap between the spaces that we inhabit physically and the spaces we inhabit virtually.

There were three considerations when designing the space. First, the bedroom suite is separate from the main house thereby allowing the design to bolder and more modern. We moved away from the traditional Palm Beach aesthetic and used saturated reds and purples to create a space that is enveloped in warm colors. We also used very linear elements to elevate the space including the custom wallpaper and bathroom tile. These black and white elements really help infuse the space with black accents while not taking away from the overall effect of the warm colors.

Second, we wanted to tap into the exciting “new” field of NFTs and digital art and bridge the divide by bringing those elements into a real life design. I love the idea of NFT and other digital art options because it provides a way for underrepresented and previously overlooked persons and communities to have a seat at the table. By creating a more equitable and accessible forum, more diverse and talented individuals will be discovered. The difficulties lie in that the metaverse currently only exists in our phones, tablets, and other digital devices and none of it ever really translates to the existing physical environment. We worked with emerging brands to create digital displays that show a variety of digital art and video but we also printed and used traditional media to display art alongside.

Lastly, while we knew we wanted to infuse digital art and smart home technology into making this space more future forward, we also recognized the need for the space to be a calming respite from the real world. We did not want it to feel cold or uninviting with too many screens or buttons. The deep red assists with this and everything is then topped with luxurious fabrics – velvets on the custom bed and window treatments also bring in the softness to balance all other elements.
